Market-related Challenges |
Kachchh is drought prone region where many communities are dependant on rain-fed agriculture and pastoralist livelihoods. The local silver market has been dependant on these communities for centuries. When Kachchh experiences droughts, many communities loose cash liquidity and cannot afford silver. The local market for traditional silver products is therefore uncertain and inconsistent. Because of this, artisans have begun producing for new markets.
Silver jewellery markets are changing rapidly. This move has resulted in a change from traditional to more general designs. As artisans increase their production for the local middle class and tourists, their traditional skills are being diluted. As refined skills and techniques disappear, artisans find it difficult to compete in the mainstream silver market, except as job workers. |

Earthquake’s Impact |
The 2001 earthquake destroyed workshops, stocks of raw material, and equipment. Many artisans are still coping with the loss. Because of earthquake-related losses and the high cost of silver, many small artisans are unable to stock enough raw materials to support their businesses.
As a result, many silver businesses have become unstable or dependant on traders. Local traders invest in silver and supply artisans with job work. Consequently traders control business transactions which are often ad hoc and exploitative. In addition, traders are interested in meeting market demands. They are not concerned about the survival of silver craft or preserving refined traditional skills. |
