There is great potential for Kachchh’s lac turned wood craft sector. However, despite artisans’ skillful craftsmanship and marketable products, artisans are leaving the craft for other employment opportunities. Current markets are not able to sustain the tradition as a livelihood. Artisans are not only unable to support their families; they are challenged by poor living conditions and inadequate health and hygiene. Because of the craft’s current state, few youth demonstrate a vested interest. The tradition’s future is growing increasingly threatened.

Market-related Challenges
The lac turned wood sector lacks exposure and access to stable markets. Artisans have abandoned the local market and now produce primarily for Kachchh’s limited seasonal tourist market and exhibitions. Their dependence on the tourist market is a source of vulnerability because the market fluctuates depending on tourist flow and time of year.
This craft has great potential to gain exposure and to successfully revisit old markets and reach new markets. Artisans want to earn their livelihood from a more sustaining practice of their craft. However, they must first work to develop consistent quality, realistic costing and pricing practices, and business skills that will help them meet market demands.
Socio-Economic Challenges
Perhaps the greatest challenges facing the Vadhas are related to their quality of life. Because of their current socio-economic situation and basic living conditions, artisans and their families are challenged by health, nutrition, hygiene, and addiction issues. These challenges not only affect their community’s quality of life, but also thwart their ability to create and produce their craft.
