In the aftermath of the 2001 earthquake, efforts to rebuild Kachchh fueled collaboration and turned local energy towards the rehabilitation of the district. This collaborative spirit created a network of NGOs that was established as the Kachchh Nav Nirman Abhiyan.* One of the Abhiyan’s initiatives was KHAMIR, instituted in partnership along with the Nehru Foundation for Development * In 2003, KHAMIR began working to empower the creative industries in Kachchh, Gujarat. KHAMIR was registered as an organization in June 2005. Subsequently, with the support of the Confederation of Indian Industries and the Government of Gujarat , KHAMIR established its campus in 2007. This campus is the centre for KHAMIR’s initiatives and operations.
Kachchh Nav Nirman Abhiyan:
Kachchh Nav Nirman Abhiyan, better known as Abhiyan, is a collective of Kachchh based development organizations with a strong local presence. The objective of the network is to synergize human knowledge, physical & financial resources to collaborate towards a Kachchh which is governed by community initiatives. The network encourages self help development, especially with marginalized sections, integrates traditional wisdom with new technologies and innovates and balances issues of human rights with human responsibilities.
Abhiyan emerged as a response to the 1998 Kandla cyclone, where it became a coordinating point between NGOs, a forum for advocacy and policy recommendations to the Government, a platform for collective implementation, and a facilitator between affected communities, donors, NGOs and Government. Thereafter it has been involved predominantly in Disaster Management in Kachchh which has seen 2 cyclones, 3 droughts and an earthquake since its inception.
